Album Review:

A very rare release indeed, The Big Surfin' Sounds Are On Capitol Records, was a promotional release pressed in very small quantities and sent to dee-jays, and record stores in the Summer of 1964.

The two All Summer Long tracks - 'I Get Around' and 'Little Honda' - open and close the album and were definitely intended to be the biggest draw for interested parties. Three Surfink tracks appear here - the offbeat 'Ratfink High,' the moody 'Phantom Surfer' instrumental, and the excellent 'Little Fink Surfs Again.' Jerry Cole's 'Power Surf,' 'Bronze Surfer,' 'Surf Age,' and 'Racing Waves' fit in very nicely here from 'Newport Beach,' 'Midnight Run' and 'Surf Route 101' from the Super Stocks' Surf Route 101 album are all excellent choices. Dick Dale's 'Summer Surf,' Banzai Washout,' 'Thunder Wave' and 'Glory Wave' are all relatively sturdy choices from the Summer Surf Lp.

Though comprised of other Capitol album tracks, The Big Surfin' Sounds are on Capitol Records is a surprisingly solid Lp; full of excellent, highly produced, and expertly played sleeper surf hits. And with 16 tracks, it kind of plays like a forgotten capsule highlighting the peak of surf music's popularity.

Capitol also released two other promotional albums; Hot Rod Music on Capitol and Big Surfing Sounds Are On Capitol (1963 version) the year prior.
