Album Review:

Though not as surf and hot rod-themed, the Marauders' second album picks up very much where their last left off. Oddly, rhythm guitarist Steve Sober is noticeably absent from this round's album credits though I think he's still shown on the cover.

'House of the Rising Sun' receives a sax lead with a fairly cool guitar break. Clarinetist Acker Bilk's 1962 chart-topper 'Stanger on the Shore' receives a surfy makeover, though the prominent sax lead makes it sound as though it was learned in high school band repertoire. The Lively Ones' 'Surf Rider' gets sped up quite a bit and is a solid guitar rocker. 'Only the Young' is a softer reprieve before the band launches into a sloppy jam of 'Memphis' - were there vocals supposed to be added to this? Del Shannon's 'Runaway' works well with the Stratocaster lead.  'Maraudin' 65' is a drum solo that is much in the style of the Surfaris. 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'' sheds its Mersey Beat and gets smoothly repurposed into a moody surf instrumental. It's easily the album's high point. 'Miserlou' owes a lot to Dick Dale though this cover is performed with a great deal of energy. I like the overdriven 8ths in the middle. The Routers' 1962 hit, 'Let's Go' is faithful to the original. 'Ridin' the Wind' could've benefited from a tune-up between the sax and guitars. Santo and Johnny's seminal slide guitar tune, 'Sleepwalk,' is given a bouncier rhythm and is a smart closer.

The names Jim Pearle, Don Miller, Pete Geerlofs, and Bill Stickney may have been forgotten over time, but Maraudin 65 is definitely worth remembering.
