Album Review:

The Super Stocks’ finished 1964 (and their short recording career) with a school-themed album in a similar vein as the Beach Boys' 'Be True To Your School.' Coming off of the excellent instrumental-packed Surf Route 101, the group's follow-up once again has the vocals at the forefront.

The title number, 'School Is A Drag,' is a good tune with great lyrics, strong production, and a catchy hook. "School Bus Blues" is a commendable enough effort, even if it winds up being a little 'wordy' for its brief 1:42 time length. The ever-dependable "Hot Rod High" gets its first showing here and thus feels fresh. Similar to "School Is A Drag," "Let Freedom Ring" is told through the eyes of an anxious teen waiting for 3 o'clock and is a solid number in its on right. "Class Day" is perhaps the most musically interesting track on the album as it spins through a bevy of keys and features not one, but two glockenspiel solos. "Gridiron Goodie" is the first of two instrumentals on the album and sounds very much like it could've been an outtake from the band's previous album. "Saturday's Hero" gets a nice reading here though the modulation seems to be difficult for all vocalists involved. "Readin', Writin' and Racin'" is another strong original, while the Hondells' "A Guy Without Wheels" features Usher finally the lead vocal. In similar territory, "Wild One" get's a second chance. However, save the new organ solo and run time; it's hard to discern any other audible differences from the earlier Hondells version. Even farther removed from the school theme, "Little Honda" is thrown in for good measure. The album closes with the serene instrumental "The Last Walk", presumably referring to the graduation.

School Is A Drag offers a nice close to the Super Stocks trilogy. Having spent the better part of 1963 and most of '64 cutting albums for Capitol, it must've been obvious to Usher that the genre was fading quickly by the time this final Stocks release hit the shelves.
