Album Review:
Australia's premiere doo-wop group, the Delltones had been around since 1958 and had some major chart success nationally. By 1965 however it seemed their run of hits had begin to wane as the harmony-driven vocal group sound began to fade out of style. The groups' final album of the 1960s featured all covers of singles from other groups - including three notable Beach Boys' tracks.
The Delltones' take on 'I Get Around' is embedded pretty squarely in their doo-wop roots compared to Brian Wilson's lavish 60s arrangement. 'Little Honda' is about as straightforward a cover of The Beach Boys' hit as there could be. The album's best take is an updated arrangement of 'Fun Fun Fun.' While the electric guitar solo at the beginning may take some liberties with the Chuck Berry-influenced original, the results are endearing. Other tracks of note are the three Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' tunes - 'Rag Doll,' 'Stay,' and 'Alone' (the last two tunes didn't originate with the Eastcoast group, but Bob Gaudio and Charles Calello's arrangements did). This trio of songs has the quartet in comfortable territory as the Seasons' sound was a major inspiration for the band circa 1962-63.
After the distinctive Surf N' Stomp, which was packed with originals, The Dellies' Burst Out definitely feels like a creative step backward. Possible better inclusions might have included their hit surf singles 'Out the Back,' and 'Hawaii' (which appeared on Golden Hits of the Golden Groups Lp) The Delltones were at their best when they sang original material, and, while an assortment of mid-sixties covers was par for the course for many pre-Beatles vocal groups in 1965, the foursome from Sydney had a lot more potential than they offer here. As it turned out, this was the last Delltones album release of the 60s.
