Album Review:
If you collect Surf and Hot Rod music, you probably already know that ‘Scramblers’ was a pretty popular studio band name. I can think of four studio groups off the top of my head with that moniker. The Scramblers who created this particular album were actually ‘The Woofers’ who were themselves actually the Dovells in disguise. (Confusing, right?)
This album is actually a repackaging of a previous album, Dragsville credited to the Woofers (Dovells), with two tracks swapped out to accommodate the latest two hits posted on the cover.
The new tracks which kick off both sides of the album were obviously recorded at a later date by a different ensemble, as the sonic disparity between the sessions is aptly noticeable. I’ve always been curious as to why producers chose to cut the tracks they did from the previous Dragsville album (‘Cool Bash’ was easily the weakest track from the previous release, and it remains intact here). Nevertheless, I assume it was faster and easier to just pull the same master tape and swap out the first song on each side.
Copies are pretty cheap and easy to find, so if you’re looking to expand your surf collection past the usual suspects, this is a great place to start!
