Album Review:

The Lively Ones fourth outing is a collection of "smash surf songs." Kind of a 'best-of' surf music collection, the band covers some well-known tunes with the addition of a few

A rip-roaring version of 'Wipe Out' begins the album with probably the closest thing to an overdriven . An equally energetic cover of 'Pipeline' follows in the same vein. The band's own 'Surf Rider' makes a deserved appearance ripped straight from their Surf Rider album. Another recycled track, 'Surf City' is sourced from their Surf City album. 'Surf Beat,' another popular hit, also comes from the Surf Rider Lp. Side one closes with finally a new recording - the Beach Boys' 'Surfin' U.S.A.' This track actually features some backing vocals though a tenor saxophone handles the lead part. 'Hide Tide' is another new track and an excellent surf tune. 'Ric-A-Tic' had already appeared on Surf Drums, and 'Hot Pastrami' is a the group's lone vocal number found on their surf albums. A bouncy rendition of 'Surfin' Safari' is a fun new take on the classic Wilson song. Dick Dale's 'Miserlou' is a carryover from the band's first album, while a shuffled version 'Shut Down' closes the record on a high note.

With only six new recordings, Great Surf Hits!! could've easily felt like a a cash-grab. Remarkably though, the recorded additions pack enough punch to still make this album worth seeking out.
