Album Review:
The final album release from the faceless Jalopy Five (and the only one that actually bears their name) was released two full years after the craze died. At the time that (I Love That) West Coast Sound was released, the Beatles were just four months away from releasing Revolver; the Beach Boys were fervently working on Pet Sounds and had just released 'Good Vibrations.' Nevertheless, Modern Sound opted to repackage some old singles and album tracks from the previous Draggin' and Surfin' volumes and issue them as one last stab at the surf market.
Only half of the ten tracks had not appeared on the Draggin' compilations. Of these, two were Beach Boys covers ('California Girl(s),' 'Sloop John B'), two were Mamas and Papas' covers ('California Dreaming,' 'Monday Monday'), and one was an original - the Four Seasons-like (but still unplaceable) 'She's Come of Age.' Both 'California Girl(s)' and 'Sloop John B' pale in comparison to the originals, and the two Mamas and Pappas numbers are equally as bad. The only track that might be worth checking out is 'She's Come Of Age,' though it doesn't have any connections to surf music.
Even for completists, (I Love That) West Coast Sound will likely disappoint, though; if you don't want to bother tracking the two other Modern Sound releases, this is a good place to start.
