Album Review:

Wilson's lush original arrangement in 'I Get Around' gets a soaring re-arrangement replacing much of the beautiful harmonies with a wall of strings, flurry of flutes, and even some French horns. The tranquilly understated 'Don't Worry Baby' benefits from the new context, which elevates its melodic lines. 'She Knows Me Too Well' is a calmingly charismatic reimagining of a lesser-known tune, and with dizzying piano flourishes from Lincoln Mayorga, it's a high point of the album. 'Fun Fun Fun' becomes a pizzicato playground for strings is one of the more straightforward "rockers" on the album. 'In My Room' is truly special and just about the strongest arrangement on the album. The charming 'Little Saint Nick' feels right at home in its orchestral Christmastime context. 'Surfin' U.S.A.' actually features an ultra-clean electric guitar and is possibly the closest thing to rock music here. 'Warmth of the Sun' is another Wilson ballad whose tonal complexity lends itself well to an orchestra. The near-perfect 'Wendy' strikes an excellent balance between melancholy and dreamy as a wistful English horn carries the melody. It is impressive just how much dynamic range Stu Phillips was able to pull out of the early hot rod composition 'Shut Down.' 'Girls On the Beach' features what I believe to be an accordion and a marching brigade of flutes coupled with just the right amount of French horns.

No, this is not strictly surf music, but it is a nice addition to your collection, even if not for any other reason than growing one's musical taste.
