// 1963 on Checker Records (LP 2987)

3.5

Album Review:

Although credited to the famous Rhythm and Blues guitarist, Bo Diddley only appeared on 4 of the 12 tracks - the remaining 8 being filled in in a similar style by Billy Lee Riley. Checker would go on to market one more Bo Diddley album under the surfing guise in Checker Records 2988 Bo Diddley's Beach Party.

While on paper, it may make sense to package a surf album under the guise of one of the pioneers of electric guitar - a staple of the surf genre - Diddley's style doesn’t work very well in the new context. I mean, Roger and Hammerstein’s “Old Man River’? Really?

Still, it’s a lot of fun if one looks past the fact that it’s not really surfing music and more of a R&B jam.
