Album Review:
Question: what do surfers do when the snow starts to fall?
Answer: They go skiing of course!
The Avalanches were a studio group comprised of Al deLory on piano, Billy Strange, Tommy Tedesco, and Wayne Burdick on guitars, David Gates on Fender bass, and, of course, Hal Blaine on drums. Under the guise of ‘The Avalanches, ’ this ensemble created one of the greatest surfing albums of all time. The record was even an inspiration for the 1990s electronic group that took their name from this one.
If you enjoy hot guitars, fuzzed-out amps, and heavy drumming, Ski Surfing will not disappoint. Everything here is so fresh and polished. The playing is masterful, and the arrangements are inventive. In addition to the four originals (Ski Surfin', Avalanche, Along the Trail with You, Slalom), there are five more wintery standards ('Midnight Sun,' 'I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,' 'Winter Evening Nocturne,' 'Canadian Sunset,' 'Baby, It's Cold Outside') and three Christmas favorites ('Winter Wonderland,' 'Sleigh Ride,' 'Snowfall').
Without a doubt, this is my favorite instrumental Surf album in my collection. If you haven’t checked this one out yet, it has my highest recommendation…
