Album Review:

As with many 60s releases, Drag City / Hey Little Cobra was obviously a cash grab by Mercury at the latest fad. Credited to the Dragsters, it was released on the label's budget line; Mercury-Wing.

The album begins with a pretty lame version of 'Hey Little Cobra.' The seldom-heard 'Dragstrip U.S.A.' was also released as a single by the Flagmen in 1964. The composition is solid though the Dragsters' version is not. The instrumental 'Ferarri II' manages to burn some acceptable rubber, while 'Go Little Tiger' is essentially a rewrite of 'Hey Little Cobra.' Even though it's a rip-off, this Pontiac song deserves a few merits. 'Jag X.K.E.' is another hot rod instrumental. Jan & Dean's 'Drag City' is excruciating to listen to. 'Super Charger'is one of the better instrumentals on the record. Like the first two instrumental tracks, 'Crazy Cobra' trades off between sax and ultra surf guitar, though the template begins to wear a tad thin at this point. The album's worst track is the hokey 'Hot Rod Queen,' which is sung in a cartoonish Southern country style. The short instrumental 'Sting Ray' drums up some excitement just as the album closes.

Although Drag City / Hey Little Cobra has a few okay moments, the entire outing would've benefited from nixing the mixed chorus and going with either an all-male or all-female group. If it weren't for the one female singer who consistently drowns out the other voices, this album may have turned out better. Oddly enough, for all it's mediocrity, the Dragsters still have a fairly sought-after Lp. Surf music listeners will most likely walk away with only 'Sting Ray' on their minds, but 'Dragstrip U.S.A.,' and 'Super Charger' might also be worth a second listen.
