Album Review:
The Big Town Boys were a Canadian band formed out of a group called the Regents who were the backing band for obscure early 60s singer Shirley Matthews. When Shirley cut the Bob Crew/Charles Calello single 'Big Town Boy' in 1963, the band redubbed themselves the Big Town Boys to capitalize on the success of the minor hit. An interesting amalgamation between Mersey-influenced garage rock and Beach Boys surf style, the group released only one album on Capitol Canada and soon disappeared into obscurity.
The Gary Paxton-penned 'It Was I' is the same tune that was recorded by the Fantastic Baggys earlier in the year. 'Hey Girl, Go It Alone' is pretty standard mid-sixties fare in the style of the McCoys' 'Hang on Sloopy'. 'Big Town Boy' is mostly a jam with a Bo Diddley beat. The Beach Boys -influenced 'I Love Her So' is written and performed in a similar vein as Gary Lewis' 'She's Just My Style' and Harry Deal & the Galaxies' 'I Feel Good' and definitely is a falsetto-laden highlight. 'Eternally' follows a similar route. 'My Freinds Aren't My Freinds Anymore' owes a lot to Bob Dylan while the brassy 'Put You Down' has a Motown tinge to it. 'My Babe' is an easy shuffle. 'My Babe' is akin to what the Dave Clark Five was putting out at the time and 'Forget About You' features the Byrds' jingle-jangle guitar sound. 'Little Honda' is a fine cover of the hit song. I love the new guitar solo through.
Altogether, the two tracks that authorize this as a part of the musical surf universe are 'Little Honda' and 'I Love Her So.' Everything else is okay but inconsequential.
