Album Review:

Davie Allan and the Arrows (credited here as simply "the Arrows"), were relative latecomers to the surf music scene. 1964 saw the release of their first single, 'War Path' (as Davie Allan) and 1965 appropriately began with 'Apache '65', which charted at a modest #64 on Billboard.

'Apache '65" is a well-executed cover of the Shadows' 1960 hit. 'Tee Pee' rocks along well while the softer 'Blue Theme' glistens with surf brilliance. "Twine Time" experiments a little with overdrive and features a harmonica. The subtle 'Diana's Theme' was written by Mike Curb and would reappear on the group's follow-up Skaterdater as 'Missy and the Fountain.' A version of 'The Rebel (Without a Cause)' had appeared on the Buddies and the Compacts album. 'C'Mon Do the Freddie' is rather cumbersome but not entirely unenjoyable. 'Tomahawk' is a pre-surf instrumental and a true highlight. A cover of Vaughn Monroe's (and later Wayne Newton's) "Red Roses For A Blue Lady" has to be the strangest inclusion here, though it works surprisingly in its new setting. 'Scratchy' is another solid cover - this time of Travis Wammack's 1960 tune. The Native American theme continues with 'Indian Giver', which features some backing vocals for the first time. A final strong instrumental 'Commanche' (sic) closes out the Lp.

While Allan's name would later be associated with popularizing the heavy fuzzbox sound, the group's early recordings were unique from other surf bands as they featured noticeably clear and crisp guitar sounds with little to no reverb. As a result, nothing on this release sounds very 'surfy' in the same vein as Dick Dale - even though the picking is squarely played in the style. What is present in the tracks is a vibey mid-sixties California sound breaking out onto its own path. Apache '65 is best enjoyed when put on in the background and not thought too much about.
