Album Review:
Davie Allan and the Arrows (credited here as simply "the Arrows"), were relative latecomers to the surf music scene. 1964 saw the release of their first single, 'War Path' (as Davie Allan) and 1965 appropriately began with 'Apache '65', which charted at a modest #64 on Billboard.
While Allan's name would later be associated with popularizing the heavy fuzzbox sound, the group's early recordings were unique from other surf bands as they featured noticeably clear and crisp guitar sounds with little-to-no reverb. As a result, nothing on this release sounds very 'surfy' - even though the picking is squarely played in the style. 'Apache '65' is a passable surf tune, and 'Rebel (Without A Cause)' is perhaps the pick out of the group.
