Album Review:
Released October 19, 1964, The Beach Boys Concert marked a lot of firsts for the Hawthorne quintet. In addition to being their first live album, it marked their first chart-topping US album (and it holds the honor of the first time a live album had done so). It was also the band's first gatefold cover with extra added pictures. Concert is also significant in the Beach Boys' canon as it documented one of the last times Brian Wilson performed regularly with the band on tour. Recorded between two live shows (December 21, 1963 & various August 1964 dates), Wilson added a smattering of vocal and instrumental overdubs on August 30 1964 to fill out the sound a little better.
Of interest is a cover of Jan and Dean's 'Little Old Lady from Pasadena' with rarely heard alternate "getting her kicks..." lyrics, an energetic cover of 'Hawaii,' and the now classic introduction to 'Little Deuce Coupe.' Funnily, 'I Get Around' was simply the 45 version with crowd overdubs. 'The Monster Mash' is also a fun listen. The lone instrumental, 'Let's Go Trippin'' was a staple in the Boys' setlists at this point and a nice reminder of their surfing roots, though by October 1964 Beatlemania was in full swing.
While not essential, The Beach Boys Concert is a very good live album from this period and copies are plentiful and inexpensive.
