Album Review:
Named after a popular surfing spot in Baja, Mexico, K-39 was the Challengers' first album of 1964. Still riding the surf-wave the band entered the new year strong with another hit.
The title track is a strong opener, while a cover of "Out of Limits" stays true to the original. An updated "Wipe-Out" is actually pretty original as drummer Richard Delvy infuses the hit song of the previous summer with every fill he can possibly come up with. "Mr. Rebel" is a strong number, and "Telstar" gets the Challengers treatment. "Mark of Zorro" has some mariachi brass behind the boys. "Back Beat" is notable for having a 2:00-minute drum break. Both "One Mint Julep" and "Bedlam" are impressively tight tracks. "Chiflado" (Spanish for "crackpot") again has the band demonstrating their cohesiveness as a group. The album concludes with Delvy showcasing his talents on the set in "Just Drums" - which, incidentally, blows the Beach Boys' own "Denny's Drums" out of the water.
Firmly rooted in their familiar surf style, K-39 is a treat. Not only is the material top-notch, but the band is tighter than ever. Too bad it didn't warrant a better cover.....
