Album Review:

The Beach Boys' Biggest Hits is an interesting compilation of very early Beach Boys tracks from the Hite Morgan sessions.

Notable inclusions are 'What Is A Young Girl Made Of,' 'Barbie,' 'Judy,' and 'Beach Boy Stomp.' The first two songs had been issued on Randy Records in 1962 in extremely limited quantities and no doubt were heard for the first time by most 1969 listeners on this obscure album. Both featured Audrey Wilson on vocals. 'Judy' had been unreleased up until this point and is a great early Wilson song. The instrumental 'Beach Boy Stomp' (also known as 'Karate') had been unreleased up until this point.

The two Tornadoes tracks are excellent surf numbers. 'Phantom Surfer' was released on Aertuan Records in 1963 and is sung with a female backing group. It would be the Tornadoes' finest recording if it weren't for the classic 'Bustin Surfboards' single from the album of the same name.

For all its obscurity, the album is full of alternate takes and unreleased demos and really belongs in more collections...
