Album Review:

This concert album is recorded live at UCLA and has one of the oddest histories. Firstly, the music is full of noticeable mistakes, inadvertent tempo changes, and odd song selections. Secondly, the album cover was mistakenly printed with the wrong title and track listing. The back cover tracks are also swapped on the vinyl. To add to the mystery, another album by the Centurians was released on the same label with an identical catalog number (1228) with almost the same cover. Later this album was reissued with a new cover and credited to the Surf Stompers as The Original Surfers' Stomp in 1964.

'Ramrod' is a spirited number, while 'Last Night' is an early headbanger. The first vocal number, 'The Surfers' Stomp', has Johnston approach the mic. 'What I'd Say' is a pretty typical cover. Big Jay McNeely's 'Something on Your Mind' features a pretty sweet electric guitar solo and has Johnston exploring the upper echelon of his range. 'Surfer's Delight' is a cheerful number. Both 'Kansas City' and 'Mashin' the Popeye' are standard early-60s fare. 'Gee, but I'm Lonesome' pulls the liveliness back a bit. The album concludes with a rambunctious rendition of 'Green Onions.'

As with many live albums of this period, Surfer's Pajama Party is of most interest when viewed as a cultural artifact rather than a concrete album.
