Album Review:
A curious release by an obscure singer named Jim Burgett. Unfortunately, contrary to what the bikini-clad cover might suggest, this is not a great long-lost surf album. Other than some borderline surf-guitar sprinkled in here and there, what we have here is essentially a live album of popular covers of the period recorded live at Lake Tahoe in California by an unknown singer.
Some stand-outs are versions of the Contours' 'Do You Love Me,' and Richie Valens' 'We Belong Together.' Both 'Johnny B. Goode' and 'Baby What You Want Me To Do' are frankly fantastic covers of 60s tunes. An obligatory inclusion of 'Louie Louie' is done rather well too. The performances here are not bad; Jim has a pleasant voice and is adept in a variety of styles. Unfortunately, surf music is not one of them.
To call this a surf release would be a stretch, though the cover is quite intriguing. One star for the artwork...
