Album Review:
The Delltones follow up to the surf-themed Surf N' Stomp found the group returning to familiar territory. Despite the success of the beach-inspired 'Out the Back,' Sing the Golden Hits of the Golden Groups opts to reach backward a few years and relive musical trends circa 1955-1962.
Side one is ripe with fully orchestrated 50s numbers in the vein of the Delltones' early influences, such as the Four Aces, Four Lads, and the Mills Brothers. These standards fit well in the group's robust quartet sound. While performed well, none of these tracks are surf-related. Side two kicks off with the Coaster's 'Poison Ivy.' 'Walk Like A Man' harkens back to the group's Four Seasons phase, which had ended roughly two years prior. The Beach Boys' 'Hawaii' is the one surf tune on the album and a notable cover. Possibly, the best moment on the album is not even a surfing one - it's the excellent 'Walkin' Along,' which was released as a single b/w 'Paper Doll' in July 1964. 'Big Man' and 'Tom Dooley' are fine but aren't of much interest.
By 1964 doo-wop and vocal groups as a whole were already being viewed as a relic of the past. Little Ceasar and the Romans came out with 'Those Oldies But Goodies' in 1961, kicking off a nostalgia wave that resulted in other artists following suit, such as 'Those Golden Oldies' (Marcy Jo and Eddie Rambeau, 1963), 'Who Put the Bomp' (Barry Mann, 1961), and Pasadena P.A.' (Jan & Dean, 1963). Sing the Golden Hits of the Golden Groups seems to be an intentionally sentimental record with enough charm to warrant a listen or two, but by surfing standards, it best look elsewhere...
The Delltones would up this album with The Dellies Burst Out in 1965, which contained a higher quotient of beach material.
