Album Review:

The Hornets were a studio group headed by Jerry Cole and Motorcycles U.S.A. has many tunes which can also be found on Capitol and Crown releases.

'On the Tracks' was also released as 'Boss Dance' and 'In the Pits' is 'T Roadster Rock' Both are from Hot Rod Dance Party. 'Bike Talk' and 'The Big Race' later appeared together on the Cycle Psychos  Lp. 'The Big Iron' had also appeared as 'The Stinger' on Hot Rod Dance Party though here is the preferable version. 'Cross-Country Run' was previously released as 'Night Drag' on Dance Party. 'Off The Line' also appeared on a few other Lps though the aliases escaped me at the moment. The laid-back 'Hare and Hound' is the only composition unique to this release that wasn't recycled. The bouncy 'The Fastest Throttle' is another tune whose counterparts I cannot identify - they're out there though. The overdriven 'Shotdown' is very much like 'Down Lok' from the Winners Checkered Flag and the shuffled 'Broadside' also appeared as it's title track. It's this version that is more interesting, however.

Just where Motorcycles U.S.A. falls among the plethora of other Cole releases is unknown, so it's impossible to tell which tunes were borrowed and which were first heard here. What we do know, though is that Liberty Records had much higher pressing standards than the budget label Crown releases (where many of these tunes can also be found). With this in mind, if you're looking for the best possible listening experience for these tunes, the Hornets' Motorcycles U.S.A. is a good starting point. Liberty would follow up this Lp with Big Drag Boats U.S.A.
