4.0

Album Review:

The Surfaris were a local five piece surf band based in Glendora, California, that had a surprise hit in May 1963 called 'Wipe Out.' Now considered an iconic 60s rock standard, the tune was actually an afterthought created to fill space on the B-side. Interestingly, the band anticipated the vocal number 'Surfer Joe' to be the more popular of the two tunes - though history would dictate otherwise. The album that ensued only featured the band on two tracks, with the rest being filled by the Challengers; a fact left explained on the first set of pressings in 1963. Later issues that same year featured an updated cover identifying the Surfaris' two hits and attributing the other songs as "Other Popular Selections By Other Instrumental Groups."

Both tracks by the Surfaris, 'Wipe Out' and 'Surfer Joe' is the hit versions and the only real reason to grab this release. The remaining ten tracks are less than noteworthy. 'Walk Don't Run' and 'Wild Weekend' are the pick of these "other popular selections" but are not at all necessary - even considering the Challengers connection.
