Album Review:

Although frequently passed off as a reissue of the Challengers' Go Sidewalk Surfing, the Good Guys release shares no common tracks with the former. Just which members of the Challengers were present at these sessions remains a mystery, though it is known that Paul Johnson (Belairs, Super Stocks) played electric guitar on the album.

The warbly Leslie speaker tone of the lead electric guitar sets 'Roller Derby apart from many other surf instrumentals. 'Scratch' is as flawless a surf instrumental as there ever was - definitely an album highlight complete with one of the strongest surf guitar solos the band ever laid to tape. 'Happy Guitars' is a simple yet joyful tune featuring some quick double-picking. 'Lanky Bones' feels much like a surf jam harkening back to the early Challengers albums. 'Small Fry' is equally exciting and captures the sport well. Gary Usher and Roger Christian's 'Collision Course' appears here for the first time and the early fuzz gives the track an extra lift over the rest of the tunes. The Paul Johnson penned 'Kami-Kaze' dates back to his Belairs days and is yet another album highlight. Like 'Collision Course,' and 'Small Fry,' both 'Duck Waddle' and 'The Wedge' would later appear on the Challenger's At the Teenage Fair album, but with overdubbed crowd noises. Dick Dale's 'The Wedge' in particular is phenomenal. 'Surf-Ari' floats along as a surfer on a wave .. or skateboard, I suppose. The low twang on 'Sidewalk Surfer' and rapid drumming make for another great surf track. A rerecorded (or remixed) 'K-39' closes out the album.

Yes, original copies of Sidewalk Surfing! are scarce, but it's definitely worth searching for. Thankfully, the album was reissued in 1975 (presumably to coincide with the second wave of skateboard interest), and all these tracks can be found on the 1994 compilation Killer Surf: The Best of the Challengers
