Album Review:

If you thought that this was a follow-up to the Tokens' excellent Wheels album, then you'd be mistaken. What Diplomat has done seems to be simply retitled old Tokens numbers (from their Neil Sedaka Days) and insert them amid a bunch of subpar instrumentals by a group called Hal Jones and the Wheelers;  'Never Till Now' somehow becomes 'Lacquered Chopper' and 'The Taste of A Tear' is bizarrely retitled 'Short Jump.' Aside from the bizarre rebranding of the two Tokens numbers, the most interesting track is 'Acey Duece [sic]," which features a prominent string section. This track (as with all the other instrumentals) can also be found on Motorcycle Scramble Music and Sounds as 'Hairpin Heartbreak' credited to the Scramblers. 'T-Bone Straight' and 'High Boy Dream' both feature some fuzzed-up guitars, which may interest some; however, most of the rest of the tracks leave much to be desired.

As one of the most misleading album covers of all time, Kings of the Hot Rods is only worth grabbing for completists, and even then, it's a stretch. Does anyone want to buy a copy for $1?
