Album Review:

Sources are vague in regards to its actual release date of Greatest Racing Themes alternating between either 1966 or 1968. To this reviewer's ears, it sounds more like the latter and the reference to the "first Rex Mays 300" on the back corroborates a 1968 as that event took place in 1967. Surf enthusiasts may recognize Dave's name from an earlier album Hangin' Twenty  by the Surftones,' which more or less morphed into this line-up.

A dizzying organ opens up 'Speed International,' an organ-driven rocker that actually boasts a pretty spooky vibe. The first half of 'Theme from Thunder Alley' bounces along with some very un-hip flutes before swelling into a psychedelic haze of fuzz guitars and pounding drums. 'Last Lap' sounds like it could've been a backing track for the animated Wacky Races TV show. A harmonica gets added to the mix for 'Speedway' just before the bland 'Grand Prix' takes a metaphorical 'pit stop.' 'Hell's Racers' again features that signature fuzz guitar and is adequate late-sixties surf rock. 'Silent Screamer' is the most inventive track on the album features some heavy percussion breaks and a mechanical breathing sound effect throughout. 'Shake-A-Lady' is filler. 'Nacho's Theme' grooves but has a weepy sadness to it. The band pulls out all the stops for 'Checkered Flag,' making for one groovy closer.

Myers tightened up his sound on Greatest Racing Themes; the instruments are all played with far more correct intonation compared with his previous group. The music captures the heavy sound of the late sixties especially well, though the prominent ultra-60s organ might be a little much for most of today's listeners. The album ends up being actually a cool, unorthodox snapshot of the effect Beatle Mania had on surf and hot rod music. It's best listened to at a high volume. That said, the original release of Racing Themes seems to have arrived at the finish line a few years too late and now sits uncomfortably between nostalgia and obscurity.
