Album Review:

The New Dimensions were a Beverly Hills surf group consisting of Art Guy, Craig Nuttycombe, Danny Belsky, Dave Dowd, Jimmy Greenspoon, and Michael Lloyd. These six musicians formed their surf group in eighth grade and released a string of three albums on the Sutton label between 1963 and 1964.

'Chicky Run' is a supercharged hot rod instrumental. A spot-on cover of the Sentinals' 'Latin'ia' follows the original closely while 'Soulout' is a preview of the group's evolving sound towards their 1964 Soul album. Like most of these tracks, 'Bongo Shutdown' probably originated from the same sessions as Sutton 332, Surf'n Bongos. 'Junker' is a gritty rocker with a healthy dose of baritone sax. The album's namesake, 'Deuces and Eights,' is a high-tension, organ-lead composition. 'Tee Town' follows the typical chord pattern with some nice guitar work. 'Totaled' features an ecstatic assortment of rhythms and grooves and is an album highlight. 'Blacktop' is a solid car-themed jam. Inspired by 'Flight of the Bumblebee,' the comedically 'Rumblebee' has the band pulling out all the stops, completing the album in one raucous explosion of energy.

It's a shame the New Dimensions never secured a major label contract being hitched to the low-quality, no promotion, budget label Sutton Records. Had Deuces and Eights been released on a more prominent figure, it would have certainly become a classic hot rod collectible. Unfortunately, Eights is a mostly forgotten hot-rodding masterpiece.
