Album Review:

Of all the first-wave surf groups, Aleong and the Nobles stand out as one of the most criminally underrated. Aleong himself was an actor who appeared in a few TV shows and movies during the late 50s and early, including the 1963 film, 'Operation Bikini' (which the back cover promotes as an upcoming project). The playing on the record is as tight as can be and encapsulates the early surf sound perfectly.

The initial track, 'Miserlou,' is one of the best covers of the tune. The excellent 'Earthquake' climbs to an eventual eruption of electric double-picking. Another vigorous Aleong original, 'Body Surf' is an extatic number complete with growling guitars and plenty of surf panache. 'Apache' gets an ultra surfy makeover, while Dick Dale's' 'Surf Beat' is as energetic as the original.  'Panic' is yet another original tune that is played with much gusto. The album's lone vocal number, 'Mary Ann (Come Surf with Me)' may not necessarily be essential listening, but it's charming nonetheless. The Chantays' 'Pipeline' is played with the opening "E" intact before the opening glissando - a point which may seem minuscule yet exemplifies the close attention to detail on this release. 'Torture' is another superb track. 'Gun and Surf' is a watery take on Henry Mancini's 'Peter Gunn Theme' though Aleong receives sole writers' credit. While most listeners will attribute 'Hiawatha' to the Surfaris,' it originated on this album and, though written by guitarist Ralph Geddes, is also confusingly credited to the actor on the back. The Ventures' / Lively Ones' 'Surf Rider' gets a super clean metamorphosis which is nearly superior to the preceding arrangement.

Aki Aleong and the Nobles' single LP is a treasure. One of the biggest standouts of Come Surf with Me is just how strong the material is. Coupled with the wonderful playing, it is one of the best-sounding records of the initial surf craze.
