Album Review:

Chipmunks A' Go-Go is distinct from the rest of the fictional group's catalog being the only album in which Ross Bagdasarian did not contribute the singing voices of the Chipmunks. Also unlike other Chipmunk releases, it also features no banter between David Seville and the three creatures.

The only surf-related song on the album is 'California Girls' which is performed proportionally well by the trio of squeaky voices. I must say it is superbly awkward hearing children's cartoon Chipmunk characters singing the praises of beautiful women across the world. Material like this had been understandably sidestepped on Ross Bagdasarian's previous albums, but listening to Alvin, Simon, and Theodore sing 'What's New Pussycat?,' and 'Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter,' is truly uncomfortable. For perspective, the Chipmunk's previous album had been titled, The Chipmunks Sing with Children and had featured such classics as 'Puff the Magic Dragon.'

By 1965 the novelty of three anthropomorphic rodents sing Christmas tunes had worn understandably thin. Chipmunks A' Go-Go is pretty weak as an album, and the surf tie-in is conspicuously lean.
