Album Review:
Man, there are a lot of these Delltones records! This 'best of' compilation put out in 1964 has one rare surf track not found on any other Delltones release - 'Out the Back.'
Beginning with the surf tracks - 'Hangin' Five,' the group's initial foray into the genre had already appeared on Surf N' Stomp, as had 'Surf City.' 'Out the Back' was the follow-up to the chart success of Hangin' Five' and is one of the best 'forgotten surf tunes. 'Sitting on the Moonlight' is in the style of the Marcels' 'Blue Moon' and is one of the group's best. 'Mary Ann' is a folksy ballad. 'Come A Little Bit Closer' is a cover of Jay and the American's single. 'Joanie' is a rather bland tune while 'That's How Many Tears' was a minor hit for Bobby Vee in 1961; the Delltones' version is pleasant. A cover of Bill Anderson's Get A Little Dirt on Your Hands' gave the Delltones their first country hit. 'Cotton Fields' is not much to write home about. The Lettermen's 'Come Back Silly Girl' is handled well and was a minor chart hit for the group. 'Passion Flower' was one of the group's first releases dating back to 1959, and sounds very out of place here.
