Album Review:

Richard Polodor was a session musician who came up with a few surf albums and a handful of singles in the early sixties. Released early in the surf music wave, this first outing with the Pacific Surfers is one of the genre’s best.

'The Rising Surf' is a phenomenal track with plenty of double-picking an cheery atmosphere. The aggressively reverby 'Surfer's Delight' is a treat, while the hypnotic 'Undercurrent' is another surf classic. 'Foot Stomp U.S.A.' is another ultra-surfy track with plenty of twang. 'The Quiet Surf' shimmers across a crosscurrent of toms. 'Breakin' Out' is a nice distraction from the other fleshed-out tracks. The album's only vocal number, 'Skeg-Along-Pete,' is a humorous ditty in the vein of the Surfaris' 'Surfer Joe.' The ominous 'Ground Swell' was also released as 'Tidal Wave' and features some a fantastic beach groove. 'Push Off' could almost be classified as a 'surf march' and brings to mind images of a highschool football game. While 'Swanee River' had been adapted to fit the genre on a few albums (such as With the Soul Surfers ) 'Swanee River Twang' is the version that beats all others. 'Put It On' is a poke at Dick Dale's 'Take It Off,' from Surfer's Choice, and a solid track in its own right. An update on Link Wray's 1959 classic, the Pacific Surfer's 'Rumble' is a livelier take on a familiar tune

When it comes to albums that perfectly capture the essence of surf music in 1963, one must look no further than The Rising Surf . Richard and crew really knock this one out of the park.
