Beach Boys' Party!

The Beach Boys

// 1965 on Capitol Records (MAS 2398)

2.0

Hully Gully / I Shoud've Known Better / Tell Me Why / Papa-Doo-Ron Ron / Mountain of Love / You've Got to Hide Your Love Away / Devoted to You / Alley Oop / There's No Other Like My Baby / Medley: I Get Around / Little Deuce Coupe / The Times They Are A-Changin' / Barbara Ann

Album Review:

To buy time to complete Pet Sounds, Brian and Co. opted to please Capitol executives by creating what many music historians now consider the 'first unplugged album.' As the Beach Boys In Concert had already been released the previous year, a party atmosphere was chosen as not to impose on the live record territory. The results are mixed, although the Medley of 'I Get Around / Little Deuce Coupe' * marks the final appearance of any surf/hot song on a Beach Boys album from their classic period. An argument could be made for 'Do It Again' from 20/20 - though by 1968 the surf sound had far run its course...

*NOTE: Dean Torrence was present for some of these recordings, and, in this reviewer's opinion - the new lyrics and delivery of 'I Get Around' are exceptionally close to the comedic tendencies of Jan & Dean. I wouldn't be surprised if they were penned in part by Dean.
