synopsis

review

Richard Polodor was a session musician who came up with a few surf albums and a handful of singles in the early sixties. Released early in the surf music wave, this first outing with the Pacific Surfers' is one of the genre’s best. With high production values and exquisite playing, Surfer's Slide is a thoroughly enjoyable listen from top to bottom.

The album opens up with the high-spirited 'Surfer's Slide' which features some exceptional guitar work from Allen. 'Sunday Surfer' is a country-tinged number while 'The Lonely Surfer' is yet another fantastic slice of surf pop. 'Ridin' the Woodie' bounces along with a solid rolling tom beat. 'Swing Low' gets a reverb-drenched makeover followed by the enjoyable 'Surfer's Hop.' The refreshing 'A Touch of Blue' brings things down for a soft surfy moment. Perhaps the album's pinnacle is 'Malibu Run' which practically emanates the sunny coast of California. The moody 'Surf Man' features a rare instance of background vocals. A cheerful rendition of 'Comin' Back to You' fits in well with the rest of the surf-related numbers. 'Undercurrent' is essentially a rewrite of Duane Eddy's 'Rumble' and the surf frantic 'Tidal Wave' acts as an excellent closer.

Released early in the surf music wave, the Pacific Surfer’s first album is one of the genre’s best. It also has my personal favorite album cover of all time. My copy is a promotional audition record in excellent condition which I bought for $15 in 2017.
